BY SAMANTHA HISSONG
I have a new spirit animal, and her name is Alessia.
"Here," her debut single through Def Jam, is an introvert's anthem. The 18-year-old, Ontario native fluidly melds buttery vocals with a smooth beat for a track that's both laidback and unquestionably intoxicating. Her lyrics are snarky and confident, but the overall song remains charming and warm.
Quite frankly, she had me at the intro. "I'm sorry if I seem uninterested, or I'm not listening, or I'm indifferent. Truly, I ain't got no business here, but since my friends are here, I just came to kick it. But really, I would rather be at home all by myself, not in this room with people who don't even care about my well-being." PREACH, MAMA.
Seemingly arisen from obscurity, the songstress has actually been posting unique covers to her YouTube channel for the past four years and managed to accumulate 21k+ subscribers and 1.5m+ total views. Not bad for someone who started at 14 and claims, "I sing in my closet.. and occasionally my bathroom."
Listen for yourselves if you don't trust my praise, but this single, produced by Pop and Oak and Sebastian Kole, is basically Oxy for your ears.
