WCM WELCOMES DOMINICAN STAR TOKISCHA
6/26/24

Having already set up her SOL record label through Warner Music Latina, Dominican artist-songwriter Tokischa is staying in the family thanks to a new global publishing deal with Warner Chappell Music.

Tokischa emerged in the Dominican music scene in 2018 with "Picala," and has since scored hits such as “Bellaca Putona” with Químico Ultra Mega, “Perra” with J Balvin, “Linda” and “La Combi Versace” with Rosalía and "Delincuente" with Anuel AA and Ñengo Flo.

The artist's new single, "Sol," was released in late May, and she has recently performed at high-profile LGBTQ+ events such as Brooklyn Pride.

“We take a lot of pride in who we pair with and sign," said WCM President of U.S. Latin & Latin America Gustavo Menéndez. "We’re always looking to work with those who are relevant and possess true artistry. Tokischa is the perfect example of that: her music speaks to her completely original creative side and integrity, and the best is yet to come.”

Added WCM SVP, A&R for U.S. Latin & Latin America Lazaro Hernandez, "She’s paved her own path on her own terms, and her unapologetic authenticity has created a platform for important conversations about freedom and identity."

WCM-WIF WOMEN'S MIXER: MAKING THE CONNECTION
6/24/24

On 6/20, the vibes were good and the room was packed as more than 200 women from all areas of the biz gathered for the second annual mixer spotlighting women in film, television and music hosted by Warner Chappell Music’s (WCM) and Women In Film (WIF) at the pubco's L.A. HQ—and thanks to a slow-moving catering truck, some carabiners and sheer grip strength—HITS managed to gain entry. Sure, we ate a disproportionate amount of the hors-d'oeuvres, but that's not what's important right now.

According to a recent study from the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, the music industry still falls short when it comes to gender parity. So, with the goal of leveling the playing field for women, WCM VP, Head of Global Film, TV, and Media Original Music Christine Belden and WIF Senior Director of Programs Maikiko James organized and hosted their recent networking mixer for women working in a broad range of film, television and music-industry roles.

The lively affair featured food (some of it not consumed by us), valuable face time with creators and executives and performances by WCM-signed artists like the enigmatic British singer-songwriter Rose Betts and Spanish indie-rock outfit Hinds.

“There are so many talented women working in film & television and music,” said Belden. "Although there has been a lot of progress, women still make up a small percentage of the jobs in both industries. And many women in the industries didn’t know each other. So the idea was twofold: a reminder to hire, support and promote women but also to connect women in film, television and music.”

For those in attendance, the mixing, mingling and networking continued post-party thanks to an online portal.

Future plans also reportedly include thorough inspections of catering trucks’ undercarriages to keep out the riffraff. To that, we say, “Challenge accepted.”

Seen above girding themselves for the indignity of appearing in our publication are (l-r) WCM's Margo Dorfman, Paula Ruiz and Carlotta Cosials of Hinds, WCM Co-Chair/COO Carianne Marshall, Ana Perrote of Hinds, Belden and WCM's Rich Robinson.

BIG MACHINE INKS JON HUME
6/11/24

Big Machine Music, a subsidiary of HYBE America, has inked Grammy-nominated songwriter/producer Jon Hume to an exclusive co-publishing agreement.

Hailing from Australia, the now Nashville-based Hume has co-written and produced Dean Lewis’ “Be Alright,” “Half a Man” and the 2024 ASCAP Pop award-winning song single “How Do I Say Goodbye,” as well as penned for Sofi Tukker, Bebe Rexha, JP Cooper, NEEDTOBREATHE, Calum Scott and forthcoming songs with David Kushner and Bishop Briggs.

Hume’s also snagged syncs such as the theme song “Don’t Forget” for Welcome to Wrexham and The Croods, plus placements with Apple, BMW and Smartwater. Most recently, he served as a producer for ABC’s American Idol, including the latest Season 22 winner, Abi Carter.

“With over 8 billion streams worldwide as a songwriter, Jon is a global presence who can seamlessly cross genres and deliver syncs for some of the biggest programs and brands,” said BMM’s President, Mike Molinar. “We are honored and privileged to welcome him to the Big Machine Music family!”

“I couldn’t be more thrilled to join Big Machine Music,” added Hume. “Mike Molinar, Alex Heddle, Hannah Babitt and the team have unbridled energy and creativity and the roster they have assembled speaks for itself.”

Seen above wondering how many machines it would take to make us obsolete are (l-r) Molinar, BABZ Founder/CEO & BMM consultant Babitt, Hume, New Tribe Management’s Kit Hume and BMM’s SVP of publishing Heddle.
