ROSANNE CASH TO RECEIVE MACDOWELL MEDAL
5/18/20

Big Deal Music Group is celebrating Rosanne Cash for receiving the MacDowell Medal. The Grammy-winning composer, performer, songwriter, best-selling author and essayist will receive the prestigious medal from newly appointed Board of Directors Chair, Nell Painter, along with MacDowell Board President, Andrew Senchak, Executive Director Philip Himberg and Resident Director David Macy on 8/8/21, when the free annual Medal Day ceremony is postponed to.

“To be included in a list with Aaron Copland, Eudora Welty, Toni Morrison, and so many more distinguished artists, is beyond my imagining–something I would not have dared to dream or even consider. I do not place myself in any way equal, but I accept this honor with deepest gratitude, as an encouragement to do my best work, and in the service of future inspiration,” shared Cash. Greil Marcus, Chairman of the this year’s MacDowell Medal selection panel, adds “Rosanne Cash has distinguished herself from her contemporaries as she has escaped the weight of her celebrated forebears.”

The Medal, which rotates annually, has been awarded since 1960 to an artist who has made an outstanding contribution to American culture. Other former winners include Thornton Wilder, Georgia O'Keefe, Leonard Bernstein, Sonny Rollins and Stephen Sondheim, among others. The presentation also draws in more than 1.2k visitors to MacDowell’s 450-acre wooded campus and offers the opportunity to visit 32 open and working studios.

With 15 albums, four Grammy awards and 12 nominations under her belt, including the 2019 nomination for her song “Crossing to Jerusalem,” off her latest album, She Remembers Everything, Cash is also the author of the best-selling memoir, Composed, and has had her essays appear in the NYT, Rolling Stone, the Oxford-American and many more publications.
