ACADEMY TELESCOPES GRAMMY WEEK EVENTS

Two days after announcing that the 67th annual Grammy Awards will still take place on 2/2 despite the Los Angeles wildfires, Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. said in a Zoom with Academy members Wednesday (1/15) that the traditional Grammy week will be condensed to three days.

MusiCares' Person of the Year event honoring The Grateful Dead will continue as planned on 1/31.

The Special Merit Awards Ceremony & Grammy Nominees Reception will be held on 2/1, followed by Clive Davis and the Academy’s Pre-Grammy Fundraising Event.

The Premiere Ceremony, which precedes the main telecast, is still set for Sunday (2/2) afternoon.

Mason emphasized multiple times that the events are a chance to not only raise funds for fire relief aid but also to "begin the healing" process.

He also noted he'd been in touch with Gov. Gavin Newsom, Mayor Karen Bass and her team, the L.A. head of tourism, the Better Business Bureau, LAFD and the managers of several of the bigger hotels in the area, which he said are only at 30% percent capacity.

Addressing first-responder resources, Mason confirmed that the Grammys would only be using off-duty police officers and additional outside security. Finally, he highlighted that many who work in the entertainment industry need the gig—another big factor in going on with the show.

"When we get together for the Grammys, it’s going to be completely reimagined," he said. "Everything will have a fundraising component. I have no agenda here other than to make sure we’re doing the right thing and to make sure we can make as big of an impact as humanely possible."

UMG, Warner and Sony are among the many who've canceled their Grammy-related events. Mason said the Academy is closely monitoring the ongoing fires and will make adjustments accordingly. Stay tuned.
