Jane's Addiction has canceled the rest of its Live Nation-promoted North American tour after frontman Perry Farrell threw a punch at guitarist Dave Navarro during an onstage outburst 9/13 in Boston.
The band was in the middle of performing the 1988 song "Ocean Size" at Leader Bank Pavilion when Farrell started angrily grunting and screaming “Fuck you” into the microphone. A frantic and agitated Farrell then turned to Navarro, screamed in his face, threw his shoulder at him and launched a punch. He was dragged offstage by bassist Eric Avery and crew members.
Jane's subsequently posted, “To all the fans, the band have made the difficult decision to take some time away as a group. As such, they will be cancelling the remainder of the tour.” A show yesterday (9/15) in Bridgeport, Connecticut, had already been canceled.
Navarro had a lot more to say in his own post on behalf of Avery, drummer Stephen Perkins and himself. "Due to a continuing pattern of behavior and the mental health difficulties of our singer Perry Farrell, we have come to the conclusion that we have no choice but to discontinue the current U.S. tour," he relayed. "Our concern for his personal health and safety as well as our own has left us no alternative. We hope that he will find the help he needs. We deeply regret that we are not able to come through for all our fans who have already bought tickets. We can see no solution that would either ensure a safe environment on stage or reliably allow us to deliver a great performance on a nightly basis."
For his part, Farrell said in a statement, "This weekend has been incredibly difficult and after having the time and space to reflect, it is only right that I apologize to my bandmates, especially Dave Navarro, fans, family and friends for my actions during Friday’s show. Unfortunately, my breaking point resulted in inexcusable behavior, and I take full accountability for how I chose to handle the situation."
Perry’s wife, Etty, took to Instagram over the weekend to play down the incident, claiming that her husband was frustrated because the band's volume was affecting his ability to sing. "Clearly there had been a lot of tension and animosity between the members," she wrote. "The magic that made the band so dynamic. Well, the dynamite was lit. Perry got up in Dave's face and body-checked him."
The tour was the band's first since 2010 with the original lineup of Farrell, Navarro, Avery and Perkins. Now, it's unclear if they will ever play together again.
