TIKTOK ANALYZES ITS OWN STATS

TikTok has issued its second annual Year on TikTok Music Report, analyzing its data on trends, songs, genres and artists. Some highlights:

  • More than 430 songs were used in videos that surpassed 1b views, up from 175 in 2020.
  • Trending songs came from dozens of countries, with some of the more notable international territories being Nigeria (CKay's "Love Nwantiti"), Vietnam (Hoàng Read's "The Magic Bomb") and Brazil (Mc Don Juan's "Bipolar").
  • And the most popular artists are… Lil Nas X was the most-viewed TikTok subject; every song on Olivia Rodrigo’s SOUR garnered more than 100k video creations; and Megan Thee Stallion and Doja Cat repeated their reigns as the #1 and #2 artists by catalog.
  • Four of the Top 5 artists of 2021 by catalog creations were female: Megan Thee Stallion, Doja Cat, Olivia Rodrigo and Cardi B. Five of the Top 10 hip-hop songs in the U.S. were also attributable to women.
  • Songs released five to 25 years ago are getting renewed attention. Kid Cudi's "Day N Nite" and Justin Timberlake's "SexyBack" are but two. Less-famous songs by The Noisettes, Dr. Dog and Lukas Graham inspired trends.
  • Latin music was the fastest-growing genre of the year, rising to sixth from 10th in 2020.
