Primary Wave boss Larry Mestel is so emotional, and he’s saving all his love for you. That’s partly why he’s geeked about the planned Whitney Houston biopic, I Wanna Dance With Somebody, slated for Thanksgiving 2022. Another reason is that Mestel is co-producing the film, alongside Clive Davis, Anthony McCarten and Compelling Pictures in collaboration with the Houston estate. Mestel, who helped negotiate the deal with Sony Pictures, is set to play a significant role in its music and branding, as are the studio’s President of Music, Spring Aspers, and RCA.
Casting for the flick is reportedly underway, just as Houston is inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (the HBO special debuted on 11/7) and becomes the first Black artist to receive three diamond certifications.
