WHAT IT IS: Atlanta’s Chase Shakur is redefining R&B with his latest project, it’s not you, it’s me, expanding on his 2022 release, It’ll Be Fine. Melding hip-hop, funk, soul, pop and R&B, Shakur crafts a unique sound rooted in Black culture. After dropping out of school to pursue music, Shakur left his childhood home, couch-surfing and spending days in various studios. Along the way, he forged collaborative bonds with producers and songwriters, some of whom went on to figure in his Forever N September collective, a group of musicians who helped craft the sound of it’s not you, it’s me. This project reflects Shakur’s mental resilience and pursuit of altering the musical landscape.
