BY KENZ MEADOWS
If you happened to be at The Satellite in Silver Lake last Friday night, you'd have caught me swingin' and shakin' along to L.A. locals Sure Sure's groovy-as-hell set. You'd have also seen a crowd of people making out with their sweethearts—a sentiment I relate to with my own desire to go back in time and hand over a Sure Sure-loaded mixtape to the 16-year-old me making out in my mom's basement. Sorry, mom.
Beyond being great for a good snogging, their music does much to show how fun indie/alt can (and should!) be. This is drive-to-the-beach-with-the-windows-down music that manages to sneak in some light melancholia here and there. And, for what it's worth, the melancholic aspect is even still decidedly sexy.
Sure Sure has this nameless quality of a bygone era in their style that leaves me wondering how much Hall and Oates and Looking Glass they listened to growing up. Also, watching these boys next door invites speculation that they throw a damn good party. They're those people that can make friends in a grocery line or anywhere else. They sign, seal and deliver a reciprocal agreement with audience members to keep the energy high for as long as the crowd does. Down to the dancing background vocalists—a touch that never ceases to thrill me—they're here to have a good time.
During a ten-song set, they played latest single "Friends" [video embedded below] and "Saudade"—off Song From 2014—two of my favorites in their discography. They also played "Space Age Mattress," "Solstice Song" and "Winona," which are tracks I'm impatiently awaiting recordings for. Additionally, their cover of The Talking Heads' "This Must Be The Place" is a pleasure to behold.
Sure Sure will be releasing a new single in early August. They'll also be playing another show in the L.A. area soon. Stay tuned for complete details.
