Elton John and Brandi Carlile extend their musical partnership with the 11/15 release of “Never Too Late," a collaboration that came to be the theme and title track to the Disney+ documentary Elton John: Never Too Late.
The doc, which opens with a limited theatrical run on 11/15 and hits the streamer on 12/13, chronicles 50 years of Captain Fantastic’s career, using his spectacular 1975 Dodger Stadium concert and his 2022 farewell at the venue as a framing device.
The Phantom Management-repped Carlile watched an early cut with John and his partner, David Furnish (who co-directed the documentary with R.J. Cutler), and wrote a set of lyrics that became “Never Too Late.” The couple liked what they saw enough to title the film after the Andrew Watt co-write, which appears over its end credits.
Brandi said, “I found the early cut of the documentary so moving. It was amazing to see historic footage of Elton and the trajectory of his life. I thought that the documentary illustrated a really important sentiment, because he might not have ever found his serenity and his peace, but he did find it, and he found it later in life. And it is never too late—too late to find the love of your life, or to start a family, or to change your mind about anything.”
Elton added, "When Brandi told me she was so inspired by the early cut of the documentary that she wanted us to co-write a new song for it, I was thrilled. I’ve known for a long time how great she was but still, reading her lyrics and co-writing with her on the music was deeply moving. I’m constantly astonished by her craft. She can channel my voice in a way only Bernie [Taupin] has managed to do before. I know Bernie helped guide her with that. She truly is one of the greatest there is."
