WATT, SMITH WELCOME FALLON AND GUESTS IN NYC

Andrew Watt and Chad Smith reprised their pickup cover band, Smith & Watt Steakhouse, for a raucous, sold-out show last night (9/18) at New York's Brooklyn Bowl with a little help from Jimmy Fallon, Chris Robinson of The Black Crowes, The Roots' Black Thought and Robert Randolph.

At their August debut gig at Stephen Talkhouse in Amagansett, New York, the Grammy-winning producer-musician and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer were joined by Paul McCartney. There were no Beatles in the house yesterday, but Republic head Monte Lipman was on hand to introduce the set, and former Watt manager Scooter Braun was seen taking in the festivities from the VIP area.

Fallon began the parade of guests by singing The Doors' "Roadhouse Blues" shortly before the clock struck midnight to usher in his 50th birthday. A cake was brought out for the occasion, but no faces were smashed into it—at least not until later.

Elsewhere, Black Thought rapped the late Ol' Dirty Bastard's "Shimmy Shimmy Ya" and freestyled over Iggy & the Stooges' "I Wanna Be Your Dog"; Randolph showed off his pedal steel skills on Jimi Hendrix's "Voodoo Chile" and "Purple Haze"; and Robinson did his best Rod Stewart and Robert Plant impressions on the Faces' "Stay With Me" and Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love."

The set was rounded out by spins through David Bowie's "Ziggy Stardust," U2's "Mysterious Ways," The Allman Brothers Band's "Whipping Post," The Police's "Roxanne" and The Cure's "Just Like Heaven," the latter two sung by Charlotte Lawrence.

Watt and Smith got a lift from backing musicians like former Saturday Night Live bandleader G.E. Smith, bassist Ivan "Funkboy" Bodley, a horn section and even rock photog Danny Clinch, who played harmonica on The Who's "Baba O'Riley" fresh off a triumphant weekend at his Bruce Springsteen-headlined Sea.Hear.Now festival in Asbury Park, N.J.

Watt is gunning for another Grammy run at Producer of the Year, which he won in 2021. This year, he's worked on everything from Pearl Jam's Dark Matter to Lana Del Rey's "Tough" and the Bruno Mars/Lady Gaga smash "Die With a Smile."

The show happened hours after a Spike Lee-hosted fundraiser for Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris at the venue, which was launched in 2009 by Peter Shapiro and is booked by Lucas Sacks.

Reports that HITS drank a couple tequilas while devouring a French-bread pizza could not be confirmed at press time.
