DEBUT ALBUMS RULE MERCURY PRIZE NOMINEES

Debuts dominate the 12 albums nominated for this year’s Mercury Prize, including sets by Portishead's Beth Gibbons, Cat Burns (pictured) and BERWYN.

UMG's Island has the most nominees with three: The Last Dinner Party’s U.K. #1, Prelude to Ecstasy, Silence Is Loud from Nia Archives and This Could Be Texas by English Teacher.

Sony has two debut nominees: Who Am I from rapper BERWYN and Burns’ early twenties (Since 93/RCA). Warner was recognized for Charli xcx’s BRAT (Atlantic) and Ghetts' On Purpose, With Purpose (Warner Music U.K.).

The first albums by two Scottish talents, producer Barry Can’t Swim and jazz musician corto.alto, add to the share of debuts on the list for, respectively, When Will We Land? (Ninja Tune) and Bad With Names (New Soil/Bridge the Gap).

The winner will be revealed in September. After existing as an awards ceremony with live performances for more than three decades, the prize will be conveyed this year in a broadcast format in partnership with BBC Music. "Extensive" promotional activity is promised, with details to be announced.
