Seth Hurwitz's I.M.P. has revived the beloved Washington D.C.-area HFStival for the first time in 13 years and will stage the event 9/21 at Nationals Park in our nation's capitol.
Two bands fronted by Ben Gibbard—The Postal Service and Death Cab for Cutie—will headline, with each performing their respective 2003 classics, Give Up and Transatlanticism, in their entirety. The lineup is rounded out by alt-rock favorites like Incubus, Bush, Garbage, Jimmy Eat World, Girl Talk, Violent Femmes, Tonic, Filter and Lit.
“Quintessential HFStival acts have been doing an unprecedented business and selling more tickets than they ever came close to back in the day, so it all made sense to bring back the HFStival,” said Hurwitz, who also operates such D.C. venues as the 9:30 Club and The Atlantis. "This will be a show for everyone who went to HFStival in decades past and those who weren’t around to be a part of the scene."
HFStival was held from 1990 through 2006 at a variety of locales, including RFK Stadium and Merriweather Post Pavilion, and featured nearly every major alternative act of the era. It ceased operations after its ostensible parent radio station, WHFS, abruptly switched from a rock-driven format to Spanish-language programming, although the event did return for one-offs in 2010 and 2011.
Tickets for the 2024 incarnation will be available through a lottery; click here for further details, and please unearth your favorite flannel and most-distressed Docs for the occasion.
