Mavin/Jonzing World/Virgin’s Rema is now an official member of Spotify’s "Billions Club." On Sunday (9/10), Spotify Africa acknowledged that his collaboration with Interscope's Selena Gomez, "Calm Down," is now the first African artist-led single to cross the monumental milestone.
"It’s a blessing," the Nigerian singer-rapper said upon hearing the news. "It’s not just a big win for me, my team and family; it’s also a big one for the culture. I feel really happy and I’m really proud of the fans for going back to the song and putting people on it. Shout-out to the DJs and everyone who made this possible."
"Calm Down" was initially released in February 2022 as the second single from Rema's debut album, Rave & Roses. The remix with Gomez arrived in August of that year and led the Afrobeats Songs chart for a record-setting 45 weeks. It has since been certified triple platinum.
The video for "Calm Down" with Gomez—released last September—has amassed more than 628m YouTube views. Meanwhile, we can't get any views on anything.
