Tamla Records is being relaunched as a mainstream imprint focusing on positive hip-hop and R&B. EJ Gaines, SVP of marketing for Capitol Christian Music Group, will oversee the label, with further supported from Capitol Records.
Capitol Music Group and Capitol CMG, which are handling the reintroduction of the label once home to Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye, have their first partner in Quality Control’s longtime mix engineer and collaborator, Thomas “Tillie” Mann, and his Encouragement Music.
“We want to honor the iconic history of the label founded by Mr. [Berry] Gordy, and Tillie Mann and Encouragement Music are exactly the kind of partners we want to work with,” said Capitol CMG co-Presidents Brad O’Donnell and Hudson Plachy in a joint statement. “EJ Gaines is a seasoned executive we know will guide Tamla with a steady hand and the support of our Capitol CMG staff. We're grateful to Michelle Jubelirer and Capitol for their belief in this new venture.”
“The relaunch of Tamla broadens our commitment to hip-hop and R&B music, as well as to the artists, label partners and creative executives who've joined Capitol Music Group over the past 18 months,” said CMG Chair & CEO Jubelirer. “The artists EJ and his team will bring to Tamla will complement the incredible talent across our label group and will have everyone’s support throughout the wider company.”
