It wasn’t just a lunch—it was a summit. The sight of Allen Grubman and John Branca breaking bread together at the Polo Lounge this week has created a deafening buzz, the entertainment-law equivalent of Godzilla splitting a McCarthy Salad with King Kong (extra avocado, hold the bacon and egg).
The two septuagenarian legal giants of the modern era are still closing many of today’s megadeals and are still near the top of their game. They’ve also been unbelievably competitive over the last 40 years, skirmishing over who made the biggest deals. Grubman has long led the reigning entertainment firm on the East Coast, while Branca has played a key role in the biggest entertainment firm on the West Coast.
Grubman’s upcoming induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame should pave the way for a future Branca induction. Oh, to have been a fly on the wall for their confab.
