BAD BUNNY TACKLES PUERTO RICAN INJUSTICES IN "EL APAGÓN" MINI-DOC

For the 23-minute music video/mini-doc for "El Apagón," the EDM banger in the middle of Bad Bunny's Un Verano Sin Ti, the Puerto Rican star tapped journalist Bianca Graulau to highlight some of the social and economic hardships faced by the island's 3 million inhabitants, including displacement and frequent power outages. Residents are confronting the latter right now during Hurricane Fiona. "El Apagón" translates to "The blackout."

Graulau presents how Puerto Ricans are displaced due to foreign wealth moving into the country, incentivized by luxury development and tax loopholes, which triggers rent hikes for locals.

Throughout his career Bad Bunny has called out Puerto Rico's government for not doing enough for its residents. At his most recent sold-out show at San Juan's Coliseo de Puerto Rico, he blasted the powers that be and their maintenance of the island's electrical grid, noting that he'd been forced to supply his own electricity for the string of shows. "We live in constant crisis," he said.

The video arrives as this unincorporated territory of the U.S.—whose people are U.S. citizens—contends with a brutal hurricane season. Many regions are again without power, and updates on weather conditions have come largely via Puerto Ricans' social-media feeds.
