Bingo! Nothing has been off limits for Pusha-T and Drake as they go toe-to-toe in this generation’s greatest rap beef. Off the release of Daytona, Pusha-T has catapulted to 2018 celebrity. He was always known as an underground rap legend, your rapper’s favorite rapper; it only took a three-day weekend for him to become a household name.
On my drive home from work last night and on my way in this morning, radio—yes, you heard correctly, radio—was at the forefront of a viral sensation. It started with Funkmaster Flex premiering “The Story of Adidon” on Hot 97. From there, every radio station had the two songs on repeat, even though neither one is available on Apple Music or Spotify.
Twitter went crazy. By midnight there were 2 million tweets devoted to “Drake” and 1 million mentioning “Pusha-T.” Of course, Instagram was flooded with memes of the meme-legend Champagne Papi. “Adidon” already has 4 million streams on SoundCloud. It hasn’t even been out for 24 hours.
In 2018, as we all know, purchases don’t measure popularity. Likes, views, plays, streams, mentions, and most importantly, time, are what determine events. It doesn’t matter who won the beef at this point. Both sides have our attention.
Will Drake return fire once again? Was this the main event? Kanye West has an album dropping Thursday night with a classic anything-can-happen Kanye event in Jackson Hole. Sit back and enjoy the show. G.O.O.D Fridays are back all June.
