BROADWAY BREAKS RECORDS IN LAST WEEK OF 2016

Broadway closed out 2016 with a record week thanks to inflated holiday season prices, an influx of tourists and five hit shows that were coming to an end.

Box office receipts at the 33 plays and musicals hit $49.7 million, making it the highest-grossing week in Broadway history, according to the Broadway League. Three shows topped $3m—Hamilton, Wicked and The Lion King— seven were over $2m and 24 surpassed $1m.

While Hamilton set a record for the highest one-week gross in Broadway history, $3.3m, The New York Times noted it was also the biggest week ever for Chicago, The Lion King and Jersey Boys, which closes this month after an 11-year run; the biggest gross ever at the 113-year-old Lyceum (Oh, Hello pulled in $911k); and the most performances ever by a single show during a seven-day period—17, by The Illusionists.

Grosses for the week ending 1/1, were up 63% from the previous week, and 15% higher than the same week in 2015.

And in case you’re wondering what it will now cost to see Hamilton, the average ticket price is $310, and the top price is $998. No word on whether Mike Pence will be returning to see the new cast in action.
