REVENUE CHART: YOU WANT FRIES WITH THOSE STREAMS?

The Chainsmokers, Major Lazer, DJ Snake

Here we go again: The chart below tracks the total weekly revenue of the Top 25 songs, tabulating sales, streams and then revenue contributions.

Some takeaways: Stream revenue once again outpaced sales revenue, as the gap widened from the week ending 9/1. “Closer” from Columbia’s The Chainsmokers f/Halsey seems permanently lodged atop the chart in terms of all four metrics shown below—and by some distance in each case. The smash increased its streaming revenue from the previous week by nearly $8k, balancing a nearly equal decline in sales revenue, while slipping in total revenue by just under a grand.

The Top 5 is unchanged from a week earlier, symptomatic of the glacial movement of the mainstream market in the streaming era. The good news is that four new tracks have hit the Top 25: Ariana Grande’s “Side to Side,” Shawn Mendes’ “Treat You Better,” Coldplay’s “Hymn for the Weekend” and Young Thug & Travis Scott’s “Pick Up the Phone.”

A word about methodology: On-demand audio streams are calculated at an average of .00575 per stream; however, streams from the ad-supported tier are calculated at a lower rate. Track sales are calculated at 70% of retail, with 69-cent and other discount sales pricing factored in.
