Universal's Straight Outta Compton, which opened to rave reviews, has exceeded the monetary expectations of many, pulling in an astounding $56m in its debut weekend. In doing so, the film has become the sixth biggest August opening in recorded history.
The titillating biopic scored an 88% on Rotten Tomatoes, with a 96% audience score. It also earned an A Cinemascore, as well as an A+ from viewers under age 25, proving wrong those early skeptics who claimed the storyline (and nearly 30-year-old album namesake) was ancient history and no longer relatable to modern youth.
The themes of racial tension and police brutality are chillingly relevant. Indeed, the phrase "speak a little truth and people lose their minds," as uttered by Ice Cube's character in the movie, couldn't be more accurate. Dr. Dre's inspired-by soundtrack, Compton, is currently #1 at iTunes, while NWA's original Straight Outta Compton and its expanded version sit at #6 and #4 respectively. Dr. Dre's The Chronic, meanwhile, follows closely at #9.
