HOW THEY WON THE WAR: Critically acclaimed roots Americana newcomers The Civil Wars will be presented with the ASCAP Vanguard Award at the performing rights org's 49th Annual Country Music Awards, Nov. 6, at Nashville''s Gaylord Opryland. The honor recognizes the impact of musical genres that help shape the future of American music. Past winners include Sara Bareilles, Beastie Boys, Beck, Nine Inch Nails, Arcade Fire, The Killers, Jack Johnson and Bjork. The duo of Joy Williams and John Paul White released their debut album, Barton Hollow, which debuted at #12 on the album sales chart to critical acclaim, selling more than 180k to date, remarkable for an indie with no major label affiliation. The received VH1's coveted "You Oughta Know" honor and served as Adele's opening act on a series of special U.K. tour dates, where the singer praised them to the crowd. "We are elated and honored to be receiving this," said Williams and White. "Past winners over the years have been inspiring and influential to us in individual ways. We are thrilled to be added to such a list." (10/6p)
