INSIDE THE BOX OFFICE: Paramount’s low-budget thriller The Devil Inside surprised most pundits by topping the weekend box office with $34m, an average of $15k per theater, easily topping the previous champ, the studio’s Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol, which added another $20m to its total of $170m in second place. Warner Bros.’ Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows dips from #2-3, with a $14m take, upping its gross to $157m. Sony’s underperforming The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is #4, with another $11m and a total of $76m, while Fox’s Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked adds $9.5 million worth of acorns to its take of $112m. Despite the disappointing box office for the adaption of Stieg Larsson's international best-seller, Sony announced over the weekend it plans to film the other two parts of the triology. (1/9p)
