NO HARD FEELINGS: L.A. Reid, who replaced Clive Davis as Arista head during the latter’s forced—and brief—retirement, will receive the President's Merit Award at Clive’s annual Pre-Grammy Gala, the Recording Academy announced this morning. The bash will take place on Saturday, Feb. 9, referred to in the trade as Grammy Eve. Said the Prez, Neil Portnow: "We are thrilled to once again collaborate with Clive Davis on this legendary gala filled with unique performances and stories. With his keen ability to foster and guide young artists, Antonio 'L.A.' Reid has brought to the world some of the most accomplished and beloved musicians. We are delighted and excited to pay tribute to this luminary who has shaped the contemporary music landscape with his passion, diversity, dedication, and musical judgment." Three days earlier, the Academy’s Producers & Engineers Wing will fete Quincy Jones and Al Schmitt at its own annual event, held, as always, at The Village Studios in West. L.A. As usual, we won't be invited to either event. (12/18a)
