CAMPUS TUBTHUMPING: Republic Records Chairman/CEO Monte Lipman ‘86 and President/COO Avery Lipman ’88 returned to their alma mater, University of Albany, to deliver the commencement address at the school's 169th ceremony last Sunday before more than 13,000 attendees, including 2,250 new graduates, who congregated on the school’s Entry Plaza lawn. The brothers acknowledged University President Dr. Robert J. Jones as a former member of the Grammy-winning group Sounds of Blackness before delivering their address on “The Epistemological Nuances and Political Biases in the Music of Chumbawamba.” The two encouraged graduates to pursue their passion and find success through tenacity and belief in themselves. The address was followed by a special performance by The Voice season 3 winner Cassadee Pope, which you can see here. As undergrads, Monte and Avery worked at the campus radio station WCDB, the University Concert Board and the Record Co-op, which they credit as the beginning of their love of the music industry.
