ON THE DOWNLOAD: This morning's iTunes charts herald the arrival of, among others, a hip-hop icon and a hard-rocking band, both of whom pay homage to their roots. Aftermath/Interscope's Eminem crashes the singles party at #2 with his "Berzerk," a high-spirited salute to early rap produced by pioneer of the form Rick Rubin (scroll down to listen). The singles side otherwise reflects some longer-term Pop trends, with the post-VMA glow still in effect. Capitol's Katy Perry retains the #1 post, with rival Lady Gaga's "Applause" (Interscope) at #4 (see our head-to-head comparison story here). Miley Cyrus' trending-topic twerking helped catapult her new one, "Wrecking Ball," to #3, while the RCA vixen's anthem "We Can't Stop" is at #6. Drake (YM/CM/Republic) and Macklemore's 's "Same Love" (Macklemore) also benefit from the VMA halo, while PRMD/Island/IDJ's Avicii and Lava/Republic's Lorde don't need any help to stay hot. Miley's upcoming Bangerz, meanwhile, hits the Top 10 albums thanks to a flood of preorders. RCA's Justin Timberlake and Atlantic's Bruno Mars also got awards-show bumps. This week's HITS Album Sales Chart toppers, Luke Bryan (Capitol Nashville) and John Mayer (Columbia), hang tough. And at the top of the album chart, it's Warner Bros.' relentless rockers Avenged Sevenfold, proving that amp-melting guitar noise can get serious feedback in the marketplace. (8/27a)
