Guardians of the Galaxy

GO ALL THE WAY: Disney’s Guardians of the Galaxy is off to a phenomenal start (earning a huge $11.2m in its late-night bow, an August record that may presage a $100m weekend), and so is the classic-rock-filled soundtrack album, which is conceived as an old-school mix tape. Awesome Mix, Vol. 1, on Marvel Music/DMG, has vaulted to #1 at iTunes in the U.S. and four other territories and Top 10 in many others. With nostalgic chestnuts like Blue Swede's "Hooked on a Feeling," The Raspberries' "Go All the Way" and Rupert Holmes' "Escape (The Pia Colada Song)," not to mention stone intergalactic classics by Bowie, the Jackson 5, Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell and 10cc, among others, it's looking like an ideal inter-generational pleasure to accompany this superhero blockbuster; via the flick, kids will learn the songs their folks already love. It may not turn out to be a two-pronged pop-cultural phenomenon like Frozen, but it’s definitely a something. Stay tuned, and practice your air-guitar moves. (8/1a)
