Could Mylo Xyloto actually mean, “Great debut”?

Capitol/EMI’s Coldplay scored the third best first-week sales debut of the year after Lady Gaga and Lil Wayne with 458k, good for #1, by far the biggest opening for a rock band in 2011.

19/RCA former Idol winner Kelly Clarkson’s Stronger bows at #2 with 170k, followed by Reprise’s Michael Buble Christmas album, with 142k at #3 and Show Dog’s Toby Keith (#5), sandwiching perennial XL/Columbia U.K. diva Adele’s 21, in only its second week below #3 since its February release.

Anti- ’s Tom Waits album, Bad As Me, enters at #6, with an impressive 61k, followed by Mercury Nashville/19/Interscope’s Scotty McCreery (#7), Capitol Nashville/EMI’s Lady Antebellum (#8), Cash Money/Universal Republic’s Lil Wayne (#9) and Columbia’s Tony Bennett Duets II album (#10).

MCA Nashville’s Vince Gill (#14) tops the list of chart newcomers, followed by Merge’s She & Him Christmas album (#16), Sony Masterworks’ Yo-Yo Ma (#18), MSM/Benchmark’s Boyz II Men (#19), Ultra’s DJ Kaskade (#22) and New Elektra’s Justice (#36).

Glassnote’s persistent Mumford & Sons is the week’s biggest double-digit gainer, moving #28-26 in its 84th week on the chart, for a total approaching 1.9 million, along with Interscope party band LMFAO (#215, +26%) and the Troy Carter-managed Mindless Behavior (#50-38, +22%) as well as Capitol/EMI’s Now 39 (#17, +16%).

Hitting retail this week are Syco/Columbia’s Susan Boyle, Island Def Jam’s Justin Bieber, RCA Nashville’s Miranda Lambert, Universal Republic’s Florence + the Machine, WB’s Wale and Lou Reed/Metallica, Roadrunner’s Megadeth and Hear Music’s Carole King Christmas album.

On Nov. 8, look for Pittsburgh-based indie Rostrum Records social network hip-hop phenom Mac Miller’s physical debut Blue Slide Park, distributed by INgrooves (digital) and Fontana (physical) which could be the sleeper of the season.
