COBRA STARSHIP, OWL CITY, MICHAEL FRANTI & SPEARHEAD FEEL THE HEAT

Three Indie Label Upstarts Enter Vibe-Raters Fray
Cobra Starship, Owl City, Michael Franti & Spearhead are the latest picks to click as they enter HITSVibe-Rater chart this week with rapidly rising albums and singles.

New York-based pop-punk group Cobra Starship’s third Decaydance/Fueled by Ramen release, Hot Mess, comes out August 11, and the first single, “Good Girls Go Bad,” featuring Gossip Girl’s Leighton Meester, is already scoring at Top 40 stations KIIS, Z100, KHKS, WIOQ and KBKS, among others. The track is produced by Kevin Rudolf, and co-written by Kara DioGuardi. Check the Vibe entry here.

Minnesota-based singer/songwriter Adam Young fronts Owl City, which ignited a huge iTunes buzz behind the Single of the Week promotion for “Fireflies,” resulting in a #33 debut for the Universal Republic album, Ocean Eyes, with 18k as an online exclusive, and a total of 650k singles downloads. There’s a national tour starting Sept. 9 through Oct. See the Vibe entry here.

Iconic hip-hop/funk/reggae artist Michael Franti & Spearhead look like they have a multi-format smash in “Say Hey (I Love You),” from their Anti-/Universal Republic album All Rebel Rockers. There’s plenty of Hot AC action, including WPLJ and KBIG. There are over 760k YouTube video views and 1.5 million MySpace plays. Check the Vibe entry here.
