That’s the kind of conclusive, news-you-can-use reporting by which we’ve made a name for ourselves. We don’t want to repeat that name, of course (this is a family site), but you get the picture.
Indeed, after one day of sales in the current weekly cycle, it appears that Madonna’s American Life (Warner Bros.), 50 Cent’s Get Rich or Die Tryin’ (Shady/Aftermath/ Interscope) and Kelly Clarkson’s Thankful (RCA) each have a shot at topping the chart. If Madonna has a strong second week, however, she should be able to hang on.
The biggest new release this week is Lil’ Mo’s Meet the Girl Next Door (Elektra), which appears on track to sell about 70-80k, though brisk sales at independent accounts could push it higher. That’ll put the Mo-ster in the Top 10.
Likewise vying for precious chart real estate are American Idol Season 2: All-Time Classic American Love Songs (RCA), Bone Crusher’s Attenchun (Arista) and Kelly Price’s Priceless (Def Soul/IDJ), each of which are looking like they’ll do in the neighborhood of 50-60k at this point.
The one to watch in this pack is the one with the network TV tie-in with the #1 show in America—that’s right, we’re talking about the American Idol release. On tonght’s show, you can hear Clay, Kimberly, Corey, Julia, Joshua, Carmen, Ricky, Trynece and Ruben sing a cut from the new album, “What the World Needs Now,” in all its up-with-people splendor. Will it have an impact on the album’s performance? Two words: Kelly Clarkson.
Tonight’s Idol will also feature season-one runner-up Justin Guarini singing “I Saw Your Face” from his upcoming RCA release, due 6/10. Will the tons of TV appearances Justin is kicking off with tonight’s performance have an impact on his album’s performance? Two words: It certainly looks like the youngster has a shot if all goes well with the viewers out there in TV-land.MUSIC'S MOST BEWILDERING NIGHT
