Indie Classical Catalog to be
Rejuvenated, Reissued
Artemis Records Chairman/CEO Danny Goldberg has announced the formation of a new classical-music label, Artemis Classics, to be launched with the reissuing of the Vanguard Classics catalog, which Artemis has purchased.

The separately owned label will release Vanguard Classics recordings—over one-third of which have never been released on CD—in budget-priced single and double CD packages, including some new compilations. Much of the Vanguard material, which includes recordings of Bach, Vivaldi, Mozart, Schubert and Brahms by artists including Joseph Szigeti, Mischa Elman and Nikolaus Harnoncourt, has been out of print for decades.

In announcing the new company, Goldberg also announced the appointment of Greg Barbero to the post of President, Artemis Classics. Barbero was previously a VP at London/Decca Records, a position he held for three years.

“This is a major milestone in the development of Artemis,” Goldberg said. “The catalog business is an important pillar in our go-forward business strategy. I grew up listening to Vanguard Classics, and it is an incredible honor to be involved with its awesome repertoire. I am also overjoyed to be reunited with Greg Barbero, who is one of the most astute and talented executives I have ever met.”

Said Barbero, “Being asked by Danny to establish Artemis Classics and revitalize the Vanguard Classics label is the most exciting challenge of my career. Vanguard Classics is a great history lesson—it was formed over 50 years ago in a time of great uncertainty in the recording industry, yet it survived more business cycles than most of us will ever see. Going forward, Artemis Classics will continue to be guided by Danny’s vision and passion for this music, and the spirit and legacy of the original owners Seymour and Maynard Solomon.”

In addition to Vanguard, Artemis Classics will also sign new artists and acquire artist catalogs for distribution.
