WANNA BE STARTING SOMETHING
Less than a year after being unseated by The Eagles' "Greatest Hits 1971-1975," Michael Jackson's "Thriller" reclaimed the title as the best-selling album of all time. Jackson's '82 album was certified for sales in excess of 26 million copies by the RIAA. Jackson's total album sales now exceed 56 million, surpassing the combined sales of all the other male Jacksons by give or take, around 56 million. Rumors that Jackson had simply bought the necessary amount of discs to push his album back on top could not be confirmed at press time, but it's a good story.
SPICE RACK
The Spice Girls became the first female group to score nine British No. 1 singles, when their latest release, "Holler/Let Love Lead The Way," went straight to the top of the U.K. charts. Only Madonna, Cliff Richard, Elvis and the Beatles have had more British No. 1 singles. "We are absolutely thrilled at being number one again because we've been away for such a long time," Sporty Spice Mel C told Britain's Sun tabloid. "A big thank you to all our loyal fans who have stuck with us… despite all reports that we suck."
YOUR ONE-STOP SHOP FOR OAK RIDGE BOYS NEWS
Gospel rock group Petra on Monday (10/30a) was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame. The Oak Ridge Boys joined Shirley Caesar, Edwin Hawkins Singers, Roger Breland and Truth, the Kingsmen, the Fisk University Jubilee Singers and late music executive Bob MacKenzie as the Hall of Fame's other newest inductees. Interestingly, neither the Oak Ridge Boys nor Petra has an original member in its current lineup. No less interesting than this item, though.
WHY, IT'S THE PLOT OF "ARTHUR 3"
Liza Minnelli was released from a hospital Monday (10/30) after spending the better part of October recovering from viral encephalitis and dehydration. The 54-year-old singer, clutching the hand of her half-sister Lorna Luft, waved as she was escorted in a wheelchair down a hospital ramp to a waiting limousine. "I feel wonderful," Minnelli said. "I'm with my sister, and I've never felt better in my life." She stood and hugged Luft, from whom she has reportedly been estranged, before getting in the limousine. Minnelli's near-death experience and the fact that neither she nor Luft have any form of career left, has brought the sisters closer together.
ANOTHER REASON YOU WON'T FIND SIR ELTON AT MEN'S WEARHOUSE
Elton John on Monday (10/30) began a $29 million legal action against his former accountants. John, who was not at London's High Court for the start of the case, is suing PricewaterhouseCoopers over money he claims is missing from his fortune. John's case involves allegations against both the accounting firm and Andrew Haydon, former managing director of John Reid Enterprises, which managed his affairs. John had also sued former manager John Reid, but that case has already been settled, with the singer accepting a $5 million payout. Explaining John's lack of involvement in his business affairs, his lawyer, Gordon Pollock, said the superstar had an aversion to "men in suits." Pollock clarified that he had to conduct his business with John either in drag or in his bathrobe.
