"We look forward to convoluting the consumer experience to such an extent that mental hospital admissions double," said Verance chairman David E. Leibowitz.

SMOKE ON THE WATERMARK

Verance Corp’s Technology
Makes SDMI Phase I A Go
San Diego tech concern Verance Corp. has licensed its SDMI Phase I audio watermarking system to all five majors, as well as hardware manufacturers such as Matsushita, Sony, TDK and Toshiba. The SDMI-sanctioned watermark technology will "trigger" Phase I players to prompt consumers to upgrade their software to incorporate Phase II screening technology, whenever those nutty SDMI knuckleheads figure out just what the hell Phase II is.

"We are extremely pleased with the growing deployment of our SDMI Phase I audio watermarking system by so many industry leaders," said Verance chairman David E. Leibowitz. "Of course, there’s really no water, and no mark, but what the hell—anything that sounds all fancy and hifalutin’ really turns me on."

Verance is currently working on a submission in response to the SDMI’s February 28 call for proposals for Phase II tech. "We look forward to convoluting the consumer experience to such an extent that mental hospital admissions double," said Leibowitz.
