Former Disney Chair Joe Roth Gets $3 Billion To Start Movie, Internet Company

Joe Roth, former chairman of Walt Disney Studios, on Tuesday unveiled his long-awaited plans for a new movie and Internet company, Revolution Studios, backed by $3 billion from Fox Entertainment, Sony Pictures and TV content provider Starz Encore Group.

Revolution will make six movies a year over six years, ranging from big budget action flicks such as the upcoming $135 million "Pearl Harbor" Roth okayed at Disney, to low-budget comedies like the recent "Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo."

The company already has film production deals in place with stars like Julia Roberts and Adam Sandler.

Along with moviemaking, Revolution will focus on Internet content via its MediaTrip division. The company also co-owns a site called Distant Corners that concentrates on science fiction and horror stories for the Net.

The veteran movie executive who has run Disney's and 20th Century Fox's film studios, called Revolution "a dream come true" because he will finally hold the financing to produce his own slate of movies instead of another studio's.
