Verve Music Group has officially upped Mike Rittberg to GM, reporting to Chairman David Foster. Based in the company's Santa Monica offices, Rittberg will oversee operations, artist development and release schedule, interface with Interscope Geffen A&M (which handles sales, marketing and film/TV licensing for Verve) and pretend to understand jazz.

Here’s a surprising stat, occurring as it does deep into a period when the single is king: Album sales are virtually flat year to date. What’s more, 12 albums have had 100k+ weeks during the first two months of this year vs. five at this point last year, while seven albums debuted with 100k or more vs. just two last year. Which proves the old saw that you’ve gotta release records to sell records. Releasing good records makes even more sense.

Aloe Blacc has criticized Spotify’s rates, but he doesn’t feel Taylor Swift should’ve yanked her music off the service. He told Page Six: “Musicians shouldn’t block their music…and probably shouldn’t remove their songs... We’re gonna fight our fights in Congress… I’m sure things will change. Streaming services are the way forward… It’s just a matter of getting the laws to work for the songwriter and…for the artist.” Blacc has said that “Wake Me Up,” his 2013 hit with Avicii, got 168m streams, but the three writers earned a piddling $12k.

Today it was announced that a bipartisan group of Congresspeople and Senators has reintroduced the Songwriter Equity Act, which would allow federal rate courts to look at the fair market value of a composition when establishing digital performance rates.
