REPUBLIC SETS THE STAGE FOR MELLENCAMP

John Mellencamp is writing another musical and it’s full of his favorite themes—small towns, star-crossed lovers and the fading American Dream.

Republic Records, Federal Films and Universal Music Theatrical will be developing the original musical with a book by Naomi Wallace. Kathleen Marshall, who has won Tony Awards for her choreography, will direct.

Republic reports that the story is about “people who live, love and die on the underside of the American Dream in small towns all across our country. … This is also a story about a town in free-fall, and the tough choices people make, not always in their best interests.” Basically, poor people who voted for Trump.

Mellencamp did his first musical, Ghost Brothers of Darkland County, with Stephen King and T Bone Burnett that toured the country in 2013-14. More details on the new show will be announced in the Fall.
