BIEBER'S BRITISH BOOM: HIS FIRST U.K. #1

Justin Bieber has finally achieved his first official U.K. #1 single. In addition to 84k first-week sales, Virgin EMI's “What Do You Mean” earned the highest first-week streams for a single ever in the U.K., racking up 3.2 million plays in its opening week.

That’s just under 1m more than One Direction’s “Drag Me Down” achieved last month. Bieber’s emotional VMA performance, aired last week seems to have proved invaluable to his latest ascent.

Despite sitting on the BBC Radio 1 C List, “What Do You Mean” (which is of course on Def Jam in the U.S.) was crowned last week's track of the week on the Beeb, which gave it 24 plays. The single is up 29k sales on Bieber's previous best, 2012’s “Boyfriend,” which peaked at #2.
