WEEKEND BOX OFFICE

MLK Drama Selma Is Top 5, Sniper Sets Records

Warner Bros.' American Sniper dominates at the box office with $90m, jumping up 15% in sales and making history in its debut weekend in wide release. Meanwhile, the Top 5 sees two debuts. Paramount's Selma holds strong and remains in the Top 5 just in time for MLK Day.

1. American Sniper (Warner Bros.) $90m 3,555/$25,374 avg. (week 4)
2. The Wedding Ringer (Sony/Columbia) $21m 3,003/$6,993 avg. (debut)
3. Paddington (Weinstein) $19m 3,303/$5,839 avg. (debut)
4. Taken 3 (Fox) $14m 3,594/$3,909 avg. (week 2)
5. Selma (Paramount) $8.3m 2,235/$3,714 (week 4)

It's worth noting that Sony Classics' Still Alice, starring Julianne Moore in the role of a college professor battling Alzheimer's (for which she won a Golden Globe and was nominated for an Oscar), earned an admirable average of $17k+ in just 12 theaters.
