Charles and Cash

RAY CASHES IN: Concord Records will mark what would have been the 80th birthday of Ray Charles with the Oct. 26 release of Rare Genius: The Undiscovered Masters. The album features 10 songs from the ‘70s through ‘90s, including a never-released Charles duet with Johnny Cash on “Why Me, Lord?,” written by Kris Kristofferson and produced by Billy Sherrill in Nashville. The gospel-flavored track, recorded in 1981 for release on CBS, never saw the light of day until its inclusion on this album. Among the other finds are "Love’s Gonna Bite You Back,” from a March 1980 session, featuring an upbeat horn arrangement and the wrenching ballad "It Hurts to Be in Love." (10/12p)
