92% prefer owning music

MUSIC FANS OWN UP: An overwhelming majority of music fans prefer ownership over streaming, Digital Music News reports, citing a study just concluded by eMusic and administered by Insight Research Group. Specifically, 92% prefer ownership of music over any other method, with unlimited playback and security of collections cited as top reasons, while 91% prefer to own the music they like rather than stream it. On the other hand, 83% use streaming to discover new music before deciding whether to buy it, 78% are happy to stream music for free but refuse to pay for it and 20% are paying for it, while only 15% say they’ll increase their use of paid streaming services. Additionally, 42% expressed interest in cloud-based storage of the music they own. Extrapolating to the general population, those percentages appear to be high enough to support the continued existence of some but not all of the sub services. (9/16a)
