Made in America

HOT NIGHTS IN THE CITY: Jay Z knows how to curate, to use the buzzword of the moment. Earlier this year he curated the eclectic soundtrack to The Great Gatsby (according to the credits), and over Labor Day weekend he curated the even more eclectic second edition of the Live Nation-produced Made in America at Philadelphia’s Benjamin Franklin Parkway. Hova's handpicked lineup encompassed tons of hip-hop (Kendrick Lamar, Public Enemy, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, 2 Chainz, Wiz Khalifa, A$AP Rocky), intricate left-of-center pop (Phoenix, Haim), EDM (Calvin Harris, Deadmau5), rock (Queens of the Stone Age, Gaslight Anthem, the unbilled Waaves), neo-soul (Miguel, Solange, Emile Sandé), industrial (fest closers Nine Inch Nails) and whatever label you wanna put on Beyoncé. The fest drew an estimated 60k each day (up from 50k a year ago), and it looks like it’s here to stay—assuming Jay continues to get off on curating and Budweiser continues to sponsor it. (9/4a)
