BAFTAS SORTA BAFFLING: On a related subject, 12 Years a Slave won Best Picture Sunday night at the British Academy Awards, while Gravity, directed by a Mexican, Alfonso Cuaron, starring American actors and released by Warner Bros., situated in beautiful downtown Burbank, somehow got Best British picture. According to Showbiz 411’s Roger Friedman, it was nonetheless eligible in that category because producer David Heyman is English—but then, producer Brad Pitt is not. Cuaron was named Best Director. In the other major categories, Brits Chiwetel Ejiofor and Cate Blanchett won Best Actor and Actress (Oscar frontrunner Matthew McConaughey wasn’t even nominated in the former category), Captain PhillipsBarkhad Abdi won Best Supporting Actor in an upset and Jennifer Lawrence got Best Supporting Actress, while American Hustle (original) and 12 Years a Slave (adapted) split the screenplay awards.
