Box office

YOUR GATEWAY-TO-SUMMER WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: Like American Idol, the Spider-Man franchise can still pull a lot of eyeballs, but it’s a far cry from its colossal heyday. By comparison, the first and third movie in Sam Raimi's original trilogy, both of which also debuted on the first weekend of May, opened to $114.8 million and $151.1 million, respectively, with much lower average ticket prices and no 3D premiums, Box Office Mojo noted. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 also fell short of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which opened with $95m five weekends back.

1. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (Sony) – $92m, 4,324/ $21,277 (debut)
2. The Other Woman (Fox) – $14.2m (-42.7%), 3,238/$4,385 avg. (week 2)
3. Heaven Is for Real (TriStar) – $8,700,000 (-39.4%), 2,930/$2,969 avg. (week 3)
4. Captain America: The Winter Soldier (Disney) – $7.8m (-52.1%), 3,179/$2,442 avg. (week 5)
5. Rio 2 (Fox) $7.6m – (-45.3%), 3,314/$2,293 avg. (week 4)
