HOF HBO

POWER OF INDUCTION: The wait's almost over. Tomorrow night, HBO premieres The 2014 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. The three-hour-plus broadcast features speeches, mini-docs and, of course, performances, about which more in a moment. But first we should note that the E Street Band speech marathon that sucked so much oxygen out of the evening has been trimmed to a fleet series of highlights. Standout performances include Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes" with Youssou N'Dour; an all-star tribute to Linda Ronstadt with Emmylou Harris, Bonnie Raitt, Stevie Nicks, Sheryl Crow and Carrie Underwood; a lovely set (and charmingly goofy speech) from Cat Stevens; an ecstatic "She's Gone" by Hall & Oates;the induction of the original KISS lineup by Tom Morello; and the show-ending Nirvana set, during which surviving members Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear welcomed guest singers Joan Jett, Kim Gordon, St. Vincent and Lorde. There would've been an all-star jam, but the E Street Band's speeches ate all the time. But the latter did play some pretty rockin' material with some guy named Bruce. (5/30p)
