KEANE IS PEACHY AT #1 IN U.K.

Veteran Melodic Popsters Score their Fifth Consecutive British Chart-Topper

Universal Island melodic rock band Keane topped the U.K. album chart for the fifth consecutive time with their latest, Strangeland, which debuted at #1 with close to 48k in sales last week. The band’s album comes out on Interscope here in the States.

Jay-Z’s latest discovery, London starlet Rita Ora, landed at #1 on the singles chart with “R.I.P.” (Roc Nation/Columbia/Sony Music Entertainment) following her guest appearance on DJ Fresh’s #1 single, “Hot Right Now,” in February.

Keane's run of best-sellers includes their 2004 debut Hopes and Fears and continued with Under the Iron Sea (2006), Perfect Symmetry (2008) and the 2010 EP Night Train.

Last week's chart-topping single debut, Marina and the Diamonds' "Electra Heart" (679/Atlantic/Warner Music), slid to #13. Emeli Sandé's "Our Version of Events" (Virgin/EMI), which debuted at #1 last year during the holidays, jumped back #8-2 with 18k in new sales, following her appearance on BBC1's The Voice, performing "My Kind of Love," which entered at #27.

On the album side, veteran singer-songwriter Richard Hawley achieved a career-best #3 debut with Standing at the Sky's Edge (Parlophone/EMI), as Adele's 21 (XL Recordings) moved #5-4 and Lana del Rey's Born to Die (Polydor/Universal) slipped #2-5.

Rebecca Ferguson's Heaven (RCA/Sony Music Entertainment) jumped again #13-6 as sales went past 500k, and Gotye's Making Mirrors (Universal Island) went #15-8, while the Cribs debuted at #9 with In the Belly of the Brazen Beast (Wichita).

Rita Ora was born in what is now Kosovo in 1990, but grew up in west London. She's currently guesting on DJ Fresh's U.K. tour as she completes work on her debut album for Roc Nation. Ora will also support Coldplay on their European tour this summer. "R.I.P.," with sales of 104k, relegated last week's chart-topper, Tulisa's "Young" (All Around the World/Universal Island), to #3.

Also in the Top 10 singles this week were Alex Clare's "Too Close" (Universal Island) at #4, Train's "Drive By" (Columbia/Sony Music Entertainment) at #6, Rihanna's "Where Have You Been" (Def Jam/Universal) at #8, and Gotye's "Somebody That I Used To Know” at #9.
