REALNETWORKS GOING MOBILE

Company Plans to Sell Software that Allows for Wireless Delivery of Music
RealNetworks plans to begin selling software that will let wireless carriers deliver audio and video to mobile devices.

The move is part of a broad push by the company to position itself for an anticipated market for mobile entertainment and business applications, according to the Wall Street Journal.

RealNetworks said the software, called RealSystem Mobile, is intended for use by carriers operating new wireless networks based on 2.5G and 3G, two standards for delivering data to wireless handsets at faster rates than supported by conventional cellular networks.

Carriers that install the RealNetworks software will be able to offer a range of services to their subscribers—for instance, Internet radio or music-video clips. Such services are expected to become more appealing as new wireless handsets with enlarged screens become more prevalent.

RealNetworks has also refined its audio- and video-player software to work better with Intel microprocessors used in mobile phones, personal digital assistants and other devices. The improvements mean that devices with the Intel processors will be able to play clear, high-resolution video, RealNetworks said.
