ONE-DAY SALES: HILL SCORES WITH THE FAITH-FUL TO THE TUNE OF 400K
Indeed, after three weeks at #1, RCA’s ELV1S 30 #1 Hits (we just love writing that title) will be deposed next week by Faith Hill’s Cry (Warner Bros.), according to early reports from national accounts.
The return of Mrs. Tim McGraw comes as the divarific fourth quarter gets into full swing, and with Cry on track to sell some 400k-odd copies this week, making for one Hill of a good start.

Ahem. Anyway, Hill’s debut means Elvis will have to settle for #2, but below that, things get even more interesting, as Def Jam’s LL Cool J makes his return with 10, which looks in the early going to be headed for 125-150k by week’s end. That means Mr. Smith could potentially best both Bon Jovi and the Rolling Stones (this week’s #2 and #3) in a classic-hip-hop-versus-classic-rock Geritol battle royale! What year is it again?
In other big debut news, Velvet Hammer/Atlantic’s Taproot makes its highly-anticipated sophomore return with Welcome, which should sell upwards of 70k. Not bad for a still-developing rock act formed (get this) less than a decade ago. Really, let’s be serious here—none of Taproot’s members is even over 40. Don’t worry, though. They’ll get there. Just give them time.
