LADIES OF SOUL HONORED AT AWARDS CEREMONY

Newcomers Win Multiple Awards as Peers Remember Aaliyah

Jill Scott won Entertainer of the Year honors at the seventh annual Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards Tuesday night (8/28).

Scott also won two solo artist awards—R&B/soul single for "A Long Walk" and R&B/soul or rap new artist—making her the dominant female of the awards ceremony.

Aaliyah was nominated for R&B, soul or rap song of the year, but lost to Yolanda Adams. However, several artists dedicated their performances and awards to the memory of the young singer/actress.

"I know, with her talent, she would've gotten this award too," Patti LaBelle said, dedicating her Lena Horne Award for outstanding career achievement to Aaliyah.

Co-hosts for the awards program were Luther Vandross, Leeza Gibbons, Eve and Shemar Moore. The program was taped at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium and will be broadcast on Saturday.

The other winners were:
R&B/soul single, for group, band or duo: "Survivor" by Destiny's Child.
R&B/soul album of the year, solo artist: "Mama's Gun"' by Erykah Badu.
R&B/soul album of the year, for group, band or duo: "3LW" by 3LW.
R&B/soul or rap song of year: "Open My Heart" by Yolanda Adams.
R&B/soul or rap new artist, for group, band or duo: "No More (Baby I'ma Do Right) " by 3LW.
R&B/soul or rap music video: "Get Ur Freak On" by Missy Elliott.
Gospel album: "Thankful" by Mary Mary.
