"The Sopranos" picked up a field-best 22 nominations, and competes with "The West Wing" in several categories, including Best Drama, which was won by the White House drama last year. Other nominees in the category are "The Practice" and "Law & Order." The nominees in the Best Comedy category are "Everybody Loves Ramond," "Frasier," "Malcolm in the Middle," "Sex and the City," and last year’s winner, "Will & Grace."
HBO also picked up nominations for the "Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band" special and "For Love or Country: The Arturo Sandoval Story," a made-for-cable movie based on the legendary jazz trumpeter. Speaking of true stories, E! received an Outstanding Non-Fiction Program (Reality) nomination for "True Hollywood Story," while ABC’s "Life With Judy Garland: Me And My Shadows" is up for Best Miniseries.
Reality shows also made a splash, as the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences debuted the Special Award for Best Non-Fiction Competitive Reality (in English, that translates to "best game show-like reality program"). Nominations include MTV’s "Road Rules: Maximum Velocity Tour" and VH1’s "Bands on the Run," which the nominations committee added after enduring countless phone calls from HITS’ own Ivana attempting to stuff the ballot box for Flickerstick.
