Fiji Blue (Virgin)
11/11/21

WHAT IT IS: The project of Trevor Dering and Valentin Fritz, Fiji Blue combines sad yet hopeful lyrics, danceable production and smooth R&B-influenced vocals to its genre-less “sad boy chill house” sound. Hailing from Germany, producer Fritz has roots in dance music, while singer/songwriter Dering found inspiration in albums like John Mayer’s Room for Squares and Frank Ocean’s Channel Orange. After meeting at Berklee College of Music, the partners developed their sound for three years before dropping their first single, “Space Makes Me Sad,” in 2019. Their debut EP, Reasons You Should Care, arrived earlier this year and was followed by a string of singles including the latest, “Flowers in the Dark.”
